Pentagon Pulse is a rhythmically driven percussion quintet inspired by geometric motion and rotational symmetry. The work is built around harmonic blocks separated by tritones, fourths, and fifths, redistributed across octaves and instruments to create a constantly shifting sonic landscape. The opening section establishes a powerful rhythmic foundation, emphasizing the timpani as a central voice, supported by layered quintuplets, intricate subdivisions, and driving 16th-note textures in the keyboard instruments.

As the piece unfolds, the concept behind the title comes to life through the image of a rotating and oscillating pentagon, where each angle of the shape is represented through contour, register, and intervallic motion. This geometric idea shapes both harmony and form, generating a frenetic middle section built on repeating metric cycles before giving way to a contrasting final section that highlights expanded color and space, featuring a marimba solo supported by sustained harmonies from tuned gongs, crotales, and metallic textures.

Trio per Viola

Trio per Viola is a contemporary chamber work inspired by the textural clarity, rhythmic vitality, and contrapuntal interplay of Baroque music, reimagined through a modern compositional language. Written in ternary form, the piece explores the viola’s expressive range by combining fluid melodic writing with rhythmically active gestures, allowing each player to move seamlessly between soloistic and supportive roles.

Throughout the work, interlocking lines and varied articulations create a lively dialogue among the three instruments, highlighting both blend and contrast within the ensemble. Trio per Viola honors historical musical traditions while presenting the viola as a versatile and expressive voice, inviting performers and audiences alike to experience its rich color and dynamic potential in a contemporary context.

The piece explores the interaction between flute, clarinet, and Venezuelan cuatro alongside a string ensemble, creating a sound world that reflects the musical identity and collective memory of the town of Guanare.

Rather than quoting specific folk melodies, the work evokes Venezuelan character through rhythmic gestures, timbral effects, and extended string techniques that merge classical and folkloric sound production. Natalia

Natalia is an arrangement of Antonio Lauro’s famous Vals Venezolano No. 3, originally written for classical guitar as part of his Four Venezuelan Waltzes collection. The work blends European waltz forms with South American rhythmic nuances, featuring syncopation and subtle tempo variations that capture the essence of Venezuelan musical expression.

This adaptation for flute ensemble preserves the lyrical beauty and natural character of the original while exploring the sonic possibilities of rarely used members of the flute family. Piccolo, alto, and bass flute voices create unique timbres that highlight the elegance and depth of Lauro’s melodies, offering performers and audiences a fresh perspective on this beloved Venezuelan waltz.
